Part of the Yucatan's massive network of underground waterways that pass through the porous limestone, Cenote X'kakah is a popular underground swimming hole. It has a small opening in the ceiling that lets in light, fresh air, and even a little rain, and impressive stalactites hanging from the ceiling. The water temperature is a constant 76 degrees fahrenheit year round.

  • At the base of two of the 336 columns in the cistern are two heads of Medusa. One is upside down and the other is sideways. Why they were placed that way is unknown. The cistern, located 500 feet of the Hagia Sophia on the historical peninsula of Sarayburnu, was built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I.

  • A tour guide explains to tourist what the American bombing campaign did to the surrounding landscape. At left of the frame is one of the many bomb craters that pockmark the area. The Cu Chi tunnels, northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, were part of a much larger underground tunnel network used by the Viet Cong in the Vietnam War. Part of the original tunnel system has been preserved as a tourist attraction where visitors can go down into the narrow tunnels and see exhibits on the defense precautions and daily life of the Vietnamese who lived and fought there.

  • Swimmers enjoy the crystal clear waters of  Cenote X'kakah near Valladolid (also near Dzitnup). Part of the Yucatan's massive network of underground waterways that pass through the porous limestone, Cenote X'kakah is a popular underground swimming hole. It has a small opening in the ceiling that lets in light, fresh air, and even a little rain, and impressive stalactites hanging from the ceiling. The water temperature is a constant 76 degrees fahrenheit year round.
