Cherry Blossom Plaque in Washington DC
A plaque marking the place the original cherry blossom trees were planted in 1912 next to Washington DC's Tidal Basin. The plaque reads: "The first Japanese cherry trees presented to the City of Washington as a gesture of friendship and good will by the city of Tokyo, were planted on this site, March 27, 1912." The plaque was installed in 1950 by the National Capital Sesquicentennial Commission. The flowering of nearly 1700 cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin, some of which are over a century old, is an annual event in Washington's spring and brings hundreds of thousands of tourists to the city.
