Istanbul Archaeology Museums Medusa Medallion
Medallion decorated with Medusa's head on display in the main building of the Istanbul Archaeology Museums. The depiction is unusual in several respects. Rather than facing straight ahead, the head to turned slightly to the left, with the eyes looking in the same direction. She does not look menacing, but rather smiling in surprise. And sankes that should have formed her hair are represented with their tails knotted under and her chin and their heads raised above her forehead. The Istanbul Archaeology Museums, housed in three buildings in what was originally the gardens of the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, Turkey, holds over 1 million artifacts relating to Islamic art, historical archeology of the Middle East and Europe (as well as Turkey), and a building devoted to the ancient orient.
